There are two ways to visit Mt. Emei: Walking and taking a bus.
By walking it takes up to 3 days to complete your trip. From Baoguo Temple at the base to Qingyin pavilion is about 3-4 hours and this section is normal, just forest where the local college students like to go at weekends. A better way [two days] I think is to start at Qingyin Pavilion after 20 minutes\' bus driving from the entrance at Baoguo Temple. 7-8 hours\' walking to Xixiang Pond the first day and another 6-7 hours\' walking to the summit the second day and drive down by bus. At first day at the begining, there maybe a lot of people because there is a place full of monkeys half an hour\'s walking from Qingyin Pavilion but after that there will be less people. Along the stone-stepped walking trail are forest, strange bugs, monkeys and monasteries. One doesn\'t need to worry too much about the sun because the trail is always under the shed of the many trees but always prepare for a rainy day if traveling during rainy season.
By bus, and bus seems to be the only way to go up into the mountain during busy season. The \"Emeishan tourist site management bureau\" won\'t allow taxis to go in, by bus it is two hours\' driving to Leidongping from the base. After arrive at Leidongping it is half an hour\'s walking that everyone has to do. It is usually extremely crowd in the 30-minute\'s walking this section. In a normal day there are a lot of people although try to avoid weekends then there maybe more people. The calble car takes only 5 minutes but consider the time costs while waiting in the line buying tickets and getting in the cable car. They don\'t sell the tickets at one place, buying the tourist site public bus ticket is at the base-90 yuan round way, buying entrance ticket at half way-185 yuan in busy season, buying cable car tickets at the cable car station-110 round way, and they don\'t sell single way tickets--I wonder what\'s going to happen if some people want to ride the cable car up and walk down? I also made a calculation on the total cost of the tickets: CNY435 per person for all the necessary tickets including buses, cable cars and entrance ticket. Plus the time wasted on buying different tickets at different places, waiting in the lines to go through the checkpoints/to get on the bus/to get on the cable cars, it is too much.
On their official website it says the busy season is from 15th January to 15th December, seems all year is the busy season, which seems ture because to my several times\' experiences traveling in Emei, there are always a lot of people.
