Well, this topic is so big that someone can write a book on it. :))
I will only give a few tips on some specific situations, since different people might have different specific requirements.
1. If you are a large dealer with good sales tunnel and nice buying quantity, and the price is sensitive to you.
My suggestion is: build a team (small or large, 2+person can work that well), buy the raw materials, send them to the producer, ask them to produce and the producer will only charge you the production fee. Normally in this way, the production fee+raw material fee will cost only 50% of the price that a factory charges you, and you can save almost 20-30% cost, depending on the detailed products. In this case, your team, their ability on cost control and understanding of raw materials is very important.
2. If you have a start-up business, your quantity cannot meet the lowest MOQ of most producers and you do not want to buy the ready-made products without your logo or label in the wholesale markets. I have one suggestion, find one person to buy your materials, send your order to the workshops, where there are a few people and they can accept small quantity, normally they love working with you. They do not have the capability to accept large orders any way, they need a consistent customer to survive. In this case, the quality control is important, the coordination between your requirements and their fulfillment is another important issue.
3. If you are a medium-sized buyer, you have many options, lots of producers can cater to your request. Keeping an eye on the QC, finding the right producer and building long term partnership is very important. Do not change the producer frequently, and work only with honest producers to avoid quality shocks. Try to avoid agents, they are good people, but many of them do not really sit in the factory and your communication/quality always suffer.
